With CES going on as we speak I figured now would be the perfect time to take a look at the ENHANCE GX-K2 Hybrid Keyboard that I’ve been using for the past week. Like with most PC keyboards the name is a mouthful, but what really matters is how the thing works and feels.

The K2 straddles the line between entry-level keyboard and those high-end mechanical keyboards. The keyboard itself features 104 backlit LED keys with some really nice Hybrid Switches.  I know the LED thing sounds silly to most people, and it is, but if you are a gamer odds are you are going to be putting in some late night and the LED’s really do make a difference. What’s even cooler is that you can flip through three colors with the touch of a key.

Now, the real thing people want to know about is what the deal is with this whole hybrid thing. For the longest time there have been two real styles of keyboards. You get the entry-level things that come with computers (most people use these) and there are mechanical keyboards for the professional lot. The latter ones are used by competitive gamers and people who take their typing very, very seriously.

The K2 uses a nice middle ground with the Hybrid Switches that give the keyboard a tactile feel, much like an actual mechanical keyboard, but at a price that won’t place you in debt until you’re ninety. Look, I know a lot of you will rip on these sort of middle of the ground things, but let’s face it; odds are you are not Mr. MLG Pro and a $150 keyboard isn’t going to fix that. Most gamers are just looking for something solid that they can actually afford without some sort of professional sponsorship.

One thing that I really like with the K2 is that is keyboard isn’t a gaudy mess. I know manufactures of gaming “things” are stuck in the 90s, but most people don’t want something that looks like a drunk clown sitting on their desk. I game a lot, but I also do all my work on the computer so I want something that at least looks a little professional. I could do without the weird DNA strands along the side, but other than that the K2 looks pretty slick.

If I had to pick a single positive word to describe the K2 it would be “practical”. It’s very hard to find something not to like about the K2 and when you realize the keyboard will run you just under $35 on Amazon, you are going to really love it all the more. And if something does go wrong Enhance has a 3-year warranty on the keyboard which is a nice treat.

Some other bits of note is the 65 inch nylon braided cable and USB housing, so you know this keyboard is going to last. It’s also equipped with 12 multimedia shortcut keys that let you control volume, media or access your email all with the single push of a button.

Enhance sent me over this keyboard to replace the aging K1 that I’ve been using for few years, and to be fair, at the price it’s at it blows my mind the quality you get for the money spent. Gaming is a really expensive pastime and I’m always looking for products that help up your game without costing you an arm and a leg. Accessory Power have nailed that in spades and their ENHANCE GX-K2 keyboard comes highly recommended.
