Star Trek Discovery has its lead in Sonequa Martin-Green

Star Trek: Discovery keeps sounding more and more unique, especially for a Star Trek series. The one thing that defines Trek has always been the ship (or Space Station) and it’s captain. Discovery is mixing that up by making the shows lead serving as a lieutenant commander onboard the USS Discovery and not its captain.

Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead) has been tapped to play lieutenant commander Rainsford and the shows lead. While Bryan Fuller is no longer attached to the show in any way, he has said numberous times over the years that he would love to see an African-American lead in his Star Trek project.

Star Trek has always been about diversity and equality in its 50 years on television and in film, so this move is simply another step in the show being the best representation of the best of humanity. Plus, Martin-Green was a badass on The Walking Dead so I’m excited for what she brings to the Trek universe.

Who knows where the show will take this and I can’t help but see her eventually taking command by seasons end. We have been trained to see the capain as the leas, so this is a neat change. Whatever the case may be, it’s great to see that Star Trek is still just as relevent today as it was 50 years ago.
