Star Wars Rebels “Iron Squadron”

Star Wars Rebels - Iron Squadron-0

Star Wars Rebels was off last week, giving me a bit of a breather. But it’s back now, even though I don’t really know why they skipped a week. Might’ve been a scheduling thing, who knows?

The Ghost crew is on a mission to evacuate rebel sympathizers on a planet called Mykapo. Kanan notes that they’re already too late; there’s already an Imperial freighter in orbit. They engage with Phoenix squadron, and suddenly find another ship in the mix. They call themselves the Iron Squadron, and they take out the freighter using their cargo containers. Also, it’s important to note that they pride themselves on never running from a fight.

After the fight, Hera contacts Commander Sato and mentions them. He recognizes the name as belonging to his brother’s old squadron, though they were wiped out a while back. He correctly guesses that it’s his nephew Mart, and asks them to help bring him home.

They head over to the ship, and quickly come to realize that it’s in incredible disrepair. They meet Gooti and Jonner first, then their R3 droid. Their hyperdrive doesn’t work, playing into their resolve to never run from a fight. They finally meet Mart, and he instantly guesses that his uncle sent them. Hera has little luck convincing them to leave with them. Also, Jonner might not necessarily be the sharpest knife in the drawer. Just sayin’.

The skirmish was reported all the way up the chain to Thrawn. He decides to send Konstantine in a single light cruiser to deal with the situation. Konstantine objects, but Thrawn has a way of manipulating people into putting their money where their mouth is. Totally played, Konstantine sets out to deal with the problem.

Ezra and Sabine stay behind in the Phantom II to try and convince Mart and his buddies to leave. Sabine manages to fix their hyperdrive, only to find Mart diverting power away from it for shields and weapons. This becomes a bigger problem when Konstantine shows up. They once again misidentify the ship as a Star Destroyer, but even then Jonner and Gooti have some misgivings. Mart relents and agrees to retreat; They all get on the Phantom II, but Mart disengages the lock before they can try to get him on board. He tells them to get his friends out of there. Ezra and Sabine do, but promise to be back for him.

His fight against Konstantine goes badly. After his container strategy fails against the larger ship, he loses power after they hit his engines. Worse, they attach a mine to the ship; Konstantine intends to use him as bait to destroy both Mart and the Ghost at once. The rebel fleet does show up, however, and they quickly find out about the mine. They have the droids move it to a container, and grapple Mart’s ship to drive the thing back in Konstantine’s face.

Thrawn’s Star Destroyer shows up about then, signaling the rebel fleet’s retreat. Thrawn and Sato exchange a few adversarial words over coms as the rebels retreat. Thrawn reprimands Konstantine for his failure, even though said failure was probably preconceived to Thrawn. Mart and Sato have their reunion, and this episode of Star Wars Rebels draws to a close.

Final Thoughts:

  • Why yes, I did notice that their ship happened to be the same model as Dash Rendar’s.
  • Got to say that I’m really loving Lars Mikkelsen‘s interpretation of Thrawn.
  • It’s probably a nickname, but Mart is a really weird name.
