Music is a necessity no matter where we go and having good speakers to enjoy said must is just as vital. So, as a music fan, when Logitech contacted me about taking a look at their new UE MEGABOOM Wireless Bluetooth Speaker, I told them, “Hell yeah.” Fast forward two-months of using the UE MEGABOOM and I think it’s a reasonable time to write a review on it.
The UE MEGABOOM is part of the high-end line of the Ultimate Ears series that brings an incredible 360-degree sound with heavy bass that can ensure precise listening in any location. Just like its little brother, the UE BOOM 2, the MEGABOOM still focuses on small dimensions and weight; measuring 3.3 x 3.3 x 8.9 inches and weighing an easily manageable 1.9 pounds. These dimensions make the UE MEGABOOM a great grab n’ go item for any occasion.

Logitech claims that the UE MEGABOOM as it ultimate social music player with its bold design. While each person has different taste, I do think it looks nice with it’s tube like design. The UE MEGABOOM uses a Bluetooth connection with a wireless range of 100-ft. I tested the range and found the claim to be accurate as I can easily play music from my living to my bedroom and in any room of my apartment. The speakers also boasts a 20-hour rechargeable battery that can last for nearly a whole day under constant use. If you do need a charge the UE MEGABOOM uses an ultra-fast micro USB charger so you can get back to the music fast. While the cord works perfectly they could have chosen a better color or a matching color scheme for the charger with the speaker. I’m not a huge fan of neon green/yellow thing.
You can control that UE MEGABOOM via the app which is titled “MEGABOOM” that’s compatible with both Android and Apple. Some other features include on/off via Bluetooth, a music alarm, fully customizable 5-band EQ, and a basic gesture control system. This allows you to tap to play or pause and double tap to skip songs. I didn’t really care for using this feature when I could easily pull out my phone and change the song from there, since it’s wireless. Still, it’s a nice feature that some will use more than others.
One thing I do have to mention is that if I’m holding the speaker I strongly recommend Logitech build some tactile controls on the side of the unit. Still, the app does have a really cool feature that inspired me to purchase a 2nd UE MEGABOOM. If you have two UE MEGABOOM’s you can sync them together to play the same song as long you have the app, so if your party gets bigger so can the sound. With a price-point of $299.99 the UE MEGABOOM is built more for the serious music lover with the cash. If you want in on the UE fun, but can;t justify the $299 Logitech also offers the snaller UE BOOM 2 for half the price of the MEGABOOM and the even smaller UE ROLL for half of the UE BOOM 2. This means there is a UE speaker to fit anyone’s price range.
Overall the Logitech UE MEGABOOM does bring a new standard to the portable speaker market and is a must have when you’re off traveling, or having a get together with friends. Improvement can still be made with update to the app and adding some buttons to the next edition, but even for a speaker that came out in 2015 the UE MEGABOOM still holds firm as one of the top speakers on the market today. After my two-months with the unit we have become inseparable and I can easily recommend it.
