Is Johnny Depp joining Kevin Smith’s Tusk?

Ain’t It Cool certainly seems to think so!

For those unfamiliar with Tusk, it’s Kevin Smith‘s upcoming film that seems to be an entry into the pantheon of Cronenbergian body horror. It’s about a psychopath hell-bent on turning a man into a walrus. And the cop hunting that psycopath? Well, it might be Johnny Depp.

This is from Ain’t It Cool, which has more than a few arguments justifying Depp’s involvement:

If Depp is confirmed to be featured in a prominent supporting role in this film, that means it has a huge marketing secret weapon that Smith has been very slick about keeping under wraps. A Kevin Smith horror-comedy hybrid about a psycho with a walrus obsession featuring Justin Long, Michael Parks, and Haley Joel Osment is one thing. Add Johnny Depp as the investigator assigned with hunting down said psycho, and it becomes another thing entirely. Something that’s all but assured to make it to at least a few hundred theaters based on name value alone (and perhaps a thousand or so more if Smith’s got a particularly awesome gem on his hands).

I’m not gonna lie, this would make me much more excited about Tusk. On paper, the movie sounds pretty dumb, but if Red State proved anything, it’s that Smith is more than willing to try something new (and it also proved that he’s a surprisingly mature director – just watch Michael Parks’ performance in that movie). And as for Johnny Depp, it’d be great to see him do something other than phone it in for Disney or Tim Burton.
