Report: Sony Is Working On A PlayStation 4.5

PlayStation 4.5

The PlayStation 4 has been doing gangbusters for Sony. It’s the one area of the company that seems to be making an actual profit for them. The idea of a PlayStation 4.5 isn’t that wild, especially when you consider that all the major console comes out with a “slim” version at some point in their life-cycle. But this time things are a bit different.

Reports are saying that Sony is planning some internal changes for the PS4 to help it with the upcoming PlayStation VR unit that launches this October. The PS4 is going to be getting a boost in power and support for 4K gaming resolution. This new PS4.5 will also sport an upgraded GPU to help with VR and boosted performance. Some are dubbing this new iteration at the PS4K.

No word on if this new concoction will be a standalone console only, or if a firmware upgrade will allow current PS4 users to take advantage of the new improvements. If the latter is the case then everything is all good in the proverbial hood, but it not, then we have a possible problem.

Sony is currently in the lead this console generation, but there is a real danger if the company manages to split their user base.  Yes, the PlayStation VR looks to be bringing the VR craze home in a “semi” affordable package. But if Sony requires users to shell out for a new PS4 to take full advantage of it, then things get really, really expensive.

The current PS4 is a powerhouse in the console market, but it is quite lacking when compared to the PC. The HTC Vive and Oculus Rift both can take full advantage of high-end gaming PCs and make the PSVR look like entry level fare. But if this new PS4.5 does what it is claiming then we begin to get a more level playing field.
