I guess if you can’t make it work in video games, might as well give it the old college try in the movies. Word of the blue blur heading the the silver screen have been going on since 2014, when Sony Pictures and Sega/Sammy announced a partnership to bring the iconic Sonic to the big screen in with a Sonic The Hedgehog movie.
Since then things have been quiet (Sonic Boom may have had something to do with it), but now we are once again getting more news on the project via an interview with SEGA CEO Hajime Satomi at Worldfolio.
Satomi stated that:
“Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.”
You heard right! It seems that not only is the film happening, but it is going to be some weird mix of live action and CGI hybrid of a film.
