YouTube Red Programming Rolls Out Feb 10th

YouTube Red

YouTube Red is the company’s paid streaming service, and like all paid services, their success will be based on the quality of the content. Sure, having the service opens up Google Music and gets rid of ads, but people are paying to see original content; something that I thought YouTube was all about anyways.

The first slate of stuffs includes the show Scare Pewdipie (PewDiePie?) which sees the personality (gamer?) get scared in real life games? I’m not really sure how this will all work, but other scare-camer (is that the genre?), Markiplier (Jesus, these names…) also joins him in all sorts of… things. These people do very well on YouTube, but it is yet to be seen if their audience will follow them to the paid Red service. We also will see three movies coming as well: “A Trip to Unicorn Island” by someone named |Superwoman|, one from AwesomenessTV, and “Lazer Team” from Rooster Teeth (I know them!).

YouTube is a changing platform that will reward top earner more and more, while making it more difficult for newcomers to be seen. What started as a video sharing platform where users could jump up the charts with unique content, is quickly devolving into normal television that sees big names backed by networks. This will be a great test to see if PiewDiePie fans (most under 18) will get their parents to fork out the monthly fee to see their king.

Still, YouTube Red is a great thing for the company as it is an incentive that keeps talent planted on YouTube. We have already seen a number of YouTube personalities break away from the platform into both film and television, with more big names announcing new outside projects. Enjoy it while you can, as YouTube will no doubt see a big shakeup in 2016 and 17.
