I don’t know thing one about the intricacies of what goes on behind the scenes in the sports world, so when it come s to eSports, it’s all a mystery to me. I’ve played LoL, Infinite Crisis, The Witcher MOBA on mobile, SMITE, and others, but each held my attention for long. I’m not huge on actual sports either, but I have more fun watching a football game than watching a game of LoL, but each their own.
But now it seems that the world of professional sports and eSports are merging, or at least they are behind the scenes. It seems that the owners of the Sacramento Kings basketball team have one out and bought a new sport team –an eSports team. An investment group has purchased a spot in the League Championship Series and to be perfectly honest, I have no idea what that means.
Can anyone just buy a spot to compete in a series, or is this like buying a team that is already part of a league. I’m guessing it’s the latter, but it is all sorts of weird sounding, but what do I know as a eSports/Sports n00b. The group has purchased Team Coast hoping to make some money in the exploding eSports market. But it seems that there may be a little drama behind the scenes as Team Coast (via their Facebook) has taken issue with how things are going down after the sale. All I can say is that contracts are key, and word of mouth means nothing.
The following is from the Team Coast Facebook page:
“Just wanted to say that when we agreed to sell the team to Gerard and Andy they did not insinuate they would replace any of our players, and specifically told us that “ALL” of our players would receive fair try-outs. Sadly, it has been realized by us that this did not occur. We find this disturbing and an abuse of trust.”
The page followed up with another post:
“To clarify…we do agree with Montecristo that all pro players must earn their place on a pro team. It is the job of the organization to field the best team. And when you sell a team, roster decisions are no longer yours. That said, when you are specifically told that your players will get a fair opportunity to make the team, and that does not happen, that is not cool.”
The page has gone silent since the last post on November 16th. No idea why, but one can guess that it has to due with the sale and the new owners looking to reign in all their social media outlets after the sale.
