Okay, so maybe it’s not quite as flashy as that Marvel creation, and maybe it can’t fly to space and back, but the governments new Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit, or TALOS, is close to being a reality with an estimated launch date of 2018.
While the military is no doubt always looking to Hollywood for fanciful ideas, this new TALOS suit came about after an American commando was killed during a raid in Afghanistan while breaching a door. The event led the top U.S. Special Forces Commander to vow to prevent future tragedies.
The TALOS suit may not be pulled from a comic book, but it does offer up some pretty incredible tech that would make even Tony Stark jealous. This new suit is made of liquid armor (insert Terminator joke here) and would allow the wearer to make the suit solid on command. This sort of technology would help better protect those units that are the first to enter when breaching a location.
“This is a program that we started after we lost an operator on a mission. The first guy coming into a particular building was engaged and unfortunately was mortally wounded. And in the wake of that, we asked ourselves, ‘Couldn’t we do better in terms of protecting him, of giving him a better advantage when he’s at the most vulnerable point that we put our operators?'” – Gen. Joseph Votel, head of U.S. Special Operations Command.
