We have known for some time that the government hack was pretty large, but now word is coming out that it was much larger than officials first reported. A few sources are stating that this attack runs much deeper with reports stating that every single social security number of every federal employee being stolen.
The Associated Press has obtained a letter from the American Federal of Government Employees president J. David Cox that talks about the attack hitting the governments human resources department. The latter states the following:
“Based on the sketchy information OPM has provided, we believe that the Central Personnel Data File was the targeted database, and that the hackers are now in possession of all personnel data for every federal employee, every federal retiree, and up to one million former federal employees.”
This not only is a major concern for federal employees, but this puts their families in danger. Chinese hackers are assumed to have pulled this hack off, but no public statement has been made by the US government those that carried out the attack.
