Adventure Time “On the Lam”

It’s getting pretty close to the end of the week, and I have no clue how Adventure Time is going to deliver on this whole thing in a single episode. If this turns out like Finn’s arm, where everything is set back to normal after a couple of episodes, I’m not going to be happy.

Anyway things start off with a chain gang on an alien world. A bunch of armed, tiny, alien bears survey the scene. The focus shifts to Martin, who is naturally on this chain gang, given his recidivism. He schemes to escape and take the guard’s solid gold helmets for his own gain. By annoying a fellow prisoner, he’s able to break the chain connecting him to the gang proper, with the exception of the alien bear that was last on the gang. He leaps across the heads of the other prisoners and it seems his plan will work, until he slips on the head of one, landing at the feet of the guards. It looks like he’s screwed, until the alien bears show up and blast the guards.

They take him to their hidden village. Martin mentions that he’s hungry, and they offer him a bowl of milk… moth milk. The contraption through which they extract it is disgusting.

Yeah… I‘d pass on that too, Martin.
Yeah… I‘d pass on that too, Martin.

He convinces them to lend him the moth, promising that he’ll use it to harry the enemy forces, stealing their resources to bring them back to the space koala bear things. He takes the now freed bear with him, dubbing him Martin 2, or M2 for short, due to his seeming resemblance to Finn. Upon reaching the town, he sells the moth for all it’s worth, much to the distress of M2.

It‘s long been established that Martin is an asshole.

He immediately goes to blow the money in the local pub on tankards of alien goop. He did not, however, count on the guards putting up a wanted poster. A chase ensues, and the scene really only establishes that badassitude pretty much runs in the Mertens family. He climbs a staircase leading to the king of the place, who looks like a child. At the king’s order, all of the guards start chasing them.

They hide in a barrel, and Martin does what may very well be his least selfish act to date; he chucks Martin 2 out of the barrel and tries to draw the guards towards him. It doesn’t work, however, since they were actually after Martin 2.

It also turns out that M2 was really old the entire time.

Martin runs for the king’s palace, abandoning M2 to deal with the guards. He takes the king’s gold helmet, seals himself inside the vault, and starts looting the place. By a stroke of luck, the king bought the moth, and Martin loads it down with as much gold as possible, escaping into space because apparently milk moths can fly in space. M2 is shown to make his escape with the supplies his people needed.

I liked this one. Maybe it’s just my appreciation of comedic sociopaths, but it’s usually funny watching Martin almost completely avoid the repercussions of his actions.

Final Thoughts:

  • “Moth for sale! Big ol’ Moth for sale! One thousand rupees or whatever y’all use for money.”
  • I was honestly expecting that pub to be like the cantina scene from Star Wars. Good on them for avoiding an obvious reference.
  • Martin is going to blow all of that gold at the racetrack.
