Adventure Time “Water Park Prank”

Adventure Time

Well this episode is different of Adventure Time. It’s not bad, just… different. I’ll explain in a moment.

Adventure Time had an episode last season called “A Glitch is a Glitch”. It was done by a guest animator, David Oreilly. And that, in a way, paved the way for more guest animated episodes like this one, animated by David Ferguson. It has a very flat and colorful aesthetic, which brings to mind modern children’s books. There are no outlines on anything, and the few lines used to make details pop are very noticeable because of this. It’s a good thing, though. The aesthetic grows on you.

A portion of the story in this episode revolves around Finn and Princess Bubblegum helping Princess Orangutan. Apparently, she was flying along (yes, by spinning her legs like a biological helicopter) and decided to stop at a small pond to cool her feet. Unfortunately for her, the pond is filled with Daddy Sadheads, horrifying beings that secrete a contact toxin that makes their host to sad to get rid of them. After Finn botches an attempt to help her out, PB applies a visualization technique that helps them shake the disgusting little nightmares off.

Christ! I‘ll be seeing these things in my nightmares.

Princess Orangutan rewards Finn with a magical coin that can turn into any currency of any amount desired. It’s pretty quickly wasted and lost, having no actual affect on the episode at all. Princess Bubblegum gets nothing for saving the both of them because she’s already a princess, I guess. Princess Orangutan offers to fly Finn to the water park, and they leave PB in the dust.

I‘m sure she doesn‘t mind walking. Sure.

At the water park, Finn and Jake run into the Ice King in the line for the slide. In keeping with the Ice King being super old, he’s wearing one of those stripy 20’s era bathing suits. They decide to prank him, since he’s not a violent sociopath or anything. With the application of a bit of stealth, Jake manages to get into the tube unseen and shape-shifts to block it. The Ice King fails to get down the slide three times, realizes that Finn and Jake duped him, and gets violent. Unfortunately for him, his magic doesn’t work when wet, and the staff eject him from the park with a lifetime ban.

I guess they‘re banning Gunther, too.

Finn and Jake get covered in orangutan hair from the shower drain, showing that mischief does not go unpunished. Finn has orangutan hair in his hood now, and he stupidly walks back into the Daddy Sadhead pool to wash it off.

This was a fun little episode. Sometimes it’s nice to have a little breather episode like this, especially since things can get heavy on the continuity in this show.

Final Thoughts:

  • The toadstool forest actually has (well, had) a sign that says “No bouncing“.
  • I’m pretty sure Princess Orangutan was voiced by Tom Kenny.
  • Make your own “No ___ in the park” joke.
