Netflix has been pushing out a number of video games through its streaming platform recently. This comes after the company increased subscription costs to help cover its gaming division and live broadcasts. But now Netflix has confirmed that it is canceling six games it previously planned to release on the service, including a Lord of the Rings game Tales of the Shire from creative studio, Wētā Workshop.
A spokesperson for the streaming giant stated that these games will no longer be part of Netflix Games due to a strategic shift in the company’s approach. The decision reflects Netflix’s ongoing efforts to refine its gaming portfolio based on user preferences and engagement. It’s unclear if these titles will release on other platforms or through other publishers
Previously announced games that have been dropped include:
- Lab Rat (Klei Entertainment)
- Don’t Star Together (Klei Entertainment)
- Rotwood (Klei Entertainment)
- Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game
- Thirsty Suitors
- Compass Point: West
The cancellation of the six planned games looks to be part of a broader strategic shift at Netflix. This change comes after the company closed one of its AAA studios last year, which was led by industry veterans such as Joseph Staten, former head of Halo.
The decision to cancel certain projects and close a AAA studio reflects Netflix’s focus on refining its strategy, prioritizing games that align with its subscribers’ preferences, and optimizing its resources. While the company is scaling back in some areas, it continues to invest in its gaming ecosystem, aiming to deliver high-quality, engaging experiences that complement its streaming offerings.
