Steam Adds New Warning To Dead Early Access Games

Steam has introduced a new feature to inform users about early-access games that haven’t received updates in a significant amount of time. How this hasn’t been a thing already is beyond us. This update, spotted by SteamDB, adds a warning to the early-access widget on Steam pages for games that haven’t been updated in over 12 months.

While Steam has always noted that early-access games “are not complete and may or may not change further,” this new warning provides more specific information about the last update, regardless of what developer’s state in their early-access descriptions. It’s also a great tip to not invest in any project that has been dead for months or even years.

For games that have not seen any update in several months a new alert will pop up right under the note that you are looking at an Early Access Game. It’ll read “Note: The last update made by the developers was over (insert number) months ago. The information and timeline described by the developers here may no longer be up to date.”

For some reason Steam can’t or simply won’t make developer’s update their games or have them removed from the platform. We’re guessing it’s a money issue as probably Steam isn’t going to pass up on sales profits from dead and unfinished games, even if it’s good for consumers and the platform to remove unfinished and broken games. This new system serves as a transparency tool for potential buyers by alerting them to the fact that a game they’re considering purchasing may no longer be actively supported.
