Pour out a carafe of black coffee for the man.
Visionary director David Lynch has passed away at age 78.
While it may not seem so to the casual observer, Lynch could easily be considered to be one of the most influential directors of all time. While his only big budget film was 1984’s Dune, it will not only be talked about forever in the discussion of both the books and the more recent films, it also started a work relationship between the director and Kyle MacLachlan. MacLachlan went on to feature in more of Lynch’s works after Dune, including Blue Velvet (1986) and Twin Peaks. MacLachlan made the following statement on Instagram at the news of Lynch’s passing:
And it’s worth noting that Lynch’s influence didn’t just stay confined to film and television, either. Many Japanese game directors and producers were influenced by his work, most notably Twin Peaks. There are a surprising number of games that recreate the Red Room from the show, or reference it in some other way, from the obvious (SWERY’s Deadly Premonition) to Persona‘s Velvet Room, which takes cues rather than be an exact duplicate, and everything in-between.
It’s also notable that Seth MacFarlane not only got Lynch for one of Family Guy‘s best cutaway gags, but also for a recurring role on The Cleveland Show.
While primarily known for his directorial work, Lynch did, occasionally act. Most recently, he played John Ford in Steven Spielberg’s The Fablemans:
I loved David’s films. Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and Elephant Man defined him as a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade. I got to know David when he played John Ford in The Fabelmans. Here was one of my heroes — David Lynch playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and seemed like a scene out of one of David’s own movies. The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time and they always will.

Lynch’s family said the following in the announcement of his death:
It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, “Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.”
It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.
While the family gave no cause of death, Lynch himself made no secret that he had quit smoking a few years ago due to emphysema. Naturally, he announced this fact in his own style.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Yes, I have emphysema from my many years of smoking. I have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I do love tobacco – the smell of it, lighting cigarettes on fire, smoking them – but there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and the price for me is emphysema. I have now quit smoking for over two years. Recently I had many tests and the good news is that I am in excellent shape except for emphysema. I am filled with happiness, and I will never retire.
I want you all to know that I really appreciate your concern.
Love,
David
