It’s not every day you get a new Game Boy cartridge game pak release. But now, thanks to Orange FM, you have one. And it’ll let you pump up the jam with FM radio stations.
Orange FM pretty much turns your Game Boy into a radio. Or, as they put it, “a car stereo system in a cartridge”. You get digital tuning, 12 station presets, RDS Radio Text Support, an on-cart stereo headphone amp, both internal and external antenna support, and digital volume adjustment. Oh, and it is compatible with the Game Boy’s onboard speaker.
As for the price, well, that varies from $31.00 to $63.00. The variance is down to what state of assembly you choose. It’s cheapest to assemble it yourself, but you’d best be confident in your soldering skills if you go that route. It also doesn’t come with a cartridge shell (though it does come with an optional GBC cartridge shell cutting guide), so you’ll have to get one separately and trim it for the components yourself regardless of whether you buy it fully assembled or not.
Now, radio tuners for handhelds are nothing new, and there were certainly some for the Game Boy back in the day. But Orange FM not only offers modern components, but also a few niceties that the old tuners likely didn’t bother with.
