Nintendo Switch Emulator Ryujinx Is Dead

Yes, it seems that, not long after the death of Yuzu, Ryujinx is now dead too.

It seems that Nintendo was still on the warpath all this time, and despite the very much above-board nature of the project, they weren’t going to mess around. According to someone close to the project, Nintendo contacted the lead developer with what likely amounted to an ultimatum, the consequences of turning down their offer likely leading to court. And so, gdkchan decided to comply with their demands, shutting down the project, removing the organization and all related assets.

And, lamentably, this leaves us with no big Switch emulation projects. While Nintendo is both allowed and legally obligated to protect what’s theirs, it’s still quite a blow, not just to the community, but to future efforts when it comes to preservation. As noted many times, large companies are not the best stewards of their own libraries.

The shame here is that, with its successor on the horizon, the Switch is essentially entering its dotage. Soon enough, official support will end, even if the store remains long after that. Repairs will eventually fall off, and soon hardware will start to very slowly die. 10-20 years on, that’s when you will truly mourn the loss of these projects, as original hardware isn’t always convenient, especially when it’s no longer produced.

So here’s to you, Ryujinx. May your legacy live on (hopefully, sooner rather than later).
