Sony Is Laying Off 900 Workers From PlayStation Division, London Studio Closed Entirely

Sony

Like the Japan Studio closure, only even worse.

Sony has made the decision to let go of 900 members of their workers from the entirety of their global workforce. This round of layoffs accounts for roughly 8% of said global workforce, and is merely the latest instance of tech-related layoffs this year.

Ryan also noted that these layoffs would affect every region the company operates in. On that note, possibly the most affected is London Studio, known for games such as The Getaway series and the SingStar games. London Studio will be shuttered entirely by these layoffs.

Coincidentally, Sony cut their sales forecast for the PlayStation 5 on February 14th, warning of lower consumer demand. They cut their initial projected sales from nearly 25 million consoles to 21 million. And, naturally, commensurate to those cuts, stock prices plummeted. Analysts had previously expected a mid-gen hardware refresh this year, but that may not be in the cards right now.

It’s almost like planning for the pandemic bubble to never burst was a bad idea.
