Capcom Adds DRM To Resident Evil: Revelations A Decade After Release

Capcom

Revelaitons.

Resident Evil Revelations recently got an update with DRM. The backlash was so severe to this that Capcom almost immediately rolled it back. But most seem to see this as part of Capcom’s recent war on mods for their PC-based catalogue.

Players noticed that the new DRM was actually causing performance issues that weren’t in the game before the update: framerate issues, stuttering, crashes, and most notably, the disabling of all mods. When they looked into the patch, these players noticed references to Enigma Protector; DRM software designed to stop the use of mods, as well as programs like Cheat Engine.

This all comes after an internal presentation by Capcom last year that labels mods as equivalent to cheating and claims that said mods could cause “reputational damage” to their IP if left unchecked. Which most familiar with the situation might immediately equate with the nude mod used on Chun-Li during the Street Fighter 6 tournament last Summer.

Needless to say, players are not happy with this DRM (frankly, no sane person argues it’s a net good for the playerbase when any game uses any DRM). And that has led to players leaving reviews laying out, in no uncertain terms, exactly what they don’t like about this situation, sending the game’s reviews on Steam into “Mostly Negative” territory.

Revelations, however, is not the only game in their catalog to have received an Enigma Protector patch over the lats six months. Late last year, Megaman Battle Network Legacy Collection saw Enigma Protector subbed in for the equally reviled Denuvo, and the recently re-released Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective also features Enigma Protector. There are also reports that both Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection have both had Enigma Protector inflicted upon them.

At least for now, Revelations is no longer saddled with Enigma Protector. Capcom pulled the patch a few days later, stating in a blog post that the rollback of the patch was due to “an issue observed with the latest update”. They did, however, state that once those problems were resolved, the patch would be re-released. So, I guess, don’t expect the games ratings to be more than negative anytime soon.
