Phil Spencer Says Xbox “Lost The Biggest Console Generation There Is”

Xbox

Bronze medal is still top 3 though.

In a recent interview with the Kinda Funny Xcast, Xbox head Phil Spencer admitted that Xbox is in third place in the current console war. As he said:

We’re not in the business of ‘out-consoling Sony or Nintendo’, there’s not a win or solution for us. I know that will upset people but that’s the truth.

Phil Spencer

And he went on:

When you’re 3rd place and your competition is as strong as they are, our vision is that anybody who’s on our console is invested in our platform and feels like a member of a massive ecosystem.

Phil Spencer

He notes that while they haven’t had the success of Sony or Nintendo this gen, they do have generational support that surpasses both combined. And, naturally, they’ve also got Game Pass, which is their biggest draw. But he does state that while their games catalog is ever growing, they’re not exactly winning on the console hardware side of things.

We lost the biggest console generation there is to lose so when we build on Xbox, we want it to feel awesome. So if we focused on great games, that doesn’t mean we’ll win the console race.

Phil Spencer

And there is some truth to that. Per VGCharts, the Xbox Series X has sold a bit shy of 21 million units worldwide as of March 2023. This is roughly half of what Sony has sold with the PS5 according to a recent earnings report. And despite the fact that it launched in 2017 and is considered part of the 8th console generation, Nintendo’s Switch sales tower over them both; as of February 7th this year, the Switch has sold a total 122.5 million units.

In addition, the interview also dives into Spencer’s disappointment with Redfall‘s launch, the Activision Blizzard King acquisition, and more. So the podcast is definitely worth a listen.
