Future! Future!
So, it wasn’t hard to miss things last year. And apparently, I overlooked Dell’s Nyx; a gaming controller concept unveiled at CES 2022. Good news is, it’s back for CES 2023, with a new, different concept.
The same core idea for the Nyx is still in place: by being connected to a server, you’re able to play games with it on any screen in your home, and even have two games running at once. As for new tricks, it has a fingerprint sensor to allow you to boot up the last game you were playing. It also has fully customizable buttons and triggers to set haptic feedback to your liking; you can even remap controls to your liking, with an intelligent overlay to tell you what they do in each game. In short, were you to remap jump from one button to another, any in-game prompts would switch to the new button, even in games that don’t natively support such a feature.
Also included are shift buttons, which expand the number of functions a single face button can handle. For example, you could set one function to a button, and another function to the same button when the shift button is held. There’s also a function to simulate a scroll wheel on a mouse.
That said, the Nyx may never materialize. It’s a concept; one that Dell has shown two years in a row, but still. Even though it may never cross the finish line itself, though, doesn’t mean that these features won’t make it into less cutting edge controllers, someday.
