Might actually have more problems overall than the original release.

Let’s just say that, as far as the Pixel Remasters go, Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster is… kinda divisive compared to the others. And one thing that is immediately noticeable to fans of the original is the fact that, for some reason, the opening credits sequence features no actual credits. It’s just ~2 minutes of magitek armor slowly walking across the snow for no reason.

Feel free to compare and contrast:

The whole sequence is supposed to be a cinematic intro, and is based around those credits appearing. Without them, it’s just two minutes of your time being wasted. For frame of reference, the only other time I can think of anything like this happening is when Capcom decided the Wii version of Okami shouldn’t have credits at all, and coincidentally got rid of Reset, on of the only vocal themes in the game.

And that’s really just the tip of the iceberg.

There are a ton of bug reports coming in on the game’s Steam discussion page. Now, for point of reference, Final Fantasy VI‘s original release had some bugs, but they never seemed to be this severe and game-breaking. One user posted a list of what he’d found, asking others to chip in, and there have been reports of scripted sequences failing completely. One guy actually managed to break the Narshe sequence and trot across the continent in Magitek armor with Biggs and Wedge, and took screenshots.

Finally, and perhaps most galling, is the opera sequence. Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster took the opportunity to do things in the 2D HD style for parts, and also included voice acting for some scenes. That’s not the problem, though. The problem is that the opera’s kinda… wrong. And there’s a lot of debate on this. But I’m going to make a point that the people dogpiling the guy that made that thread aren’t realizing: they’ve done the Opera live multiple times. And all of them were better. And all of these people are citing context that didn’t exist in the first place; the point in the original game wasn’t “Celes is a soldier, not an opera floozy, so of course she can’t sing”, it’s “despite having no training in it due to being a soldier, she manages to sing well enough to (temporarily) fool at least two people into believing that she’s the singer she replaced”. That’s the entire point of the sequence.

I mean, Distant Worlds did this like 5 times.

Maybe I’m just a crotchety fart and I’m never happy. Or maybe, I’ve watched Square Enix screw up legacy content so many times that I kinda just want things to, you know, go off mostly without a hitch. I don’t think, considering the amount of effort they put into Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster over the other five games, that it’s a totally unreasonable thing.

The upside is, it’s the PC version, so it can be modded. But I really don’t think that should be necessary.
