The 2018 Oscar Nominees Are…

The nominees for the 90th Academy Awards were announced this morning by Academy President John Bailey, Andy Serkis, and Tiffany Haddish. Honestly, it’s a pretty fantastic list, without any glaring omissions or outright duds. The full list of nominees is below, and I’m going to put a star next to any nomination that I nailed in my previous article.

Best Picture

Call Me By Your Name*

Darkest Hour

Dunkirk*

Get Out*

Lady Bird*

Phantom Thread

The Post*

The Shape of Water*

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri*

That’s a solid list. I’m not surprised to see Darkest Hour among the nominees, and I’m pleased as hell to see Phantom Thread included. I can’t imagine getting upset at any of these movies winning.

Best Director

Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk*

Jordan Peele, Get Out

Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird*

Paul Thomas Anderson, Phantom Thread

Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water*

Way to go, Jordan Peele! I imagined Get Out nominated for screenplay and picture, but it made a surprising last-second push, as did Phantom Thread. I still see this going to del Toro or Nolan, either of whom are deserving, but Peele’s nomination – for his first feature, no less – is a huge vote of confidence in his future work.

Best Actor

Timothee Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name*

Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread*

Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out

Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour*

Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.

The inclusion of Kaluuya and Washington is a wonderful surprise, because my original prediction had this being a very white category (although it’s still bananas that Tom Hanks hasn’t been nominated since Cast Away). I guess the backlash caught up with James Franco, who for a while looked poised to win this handily.

Best Actress

Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water*

Margot Robbie, I, Tonya*

Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird*

Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri*

Meryl Streep, The Post*

Just wanna say that I called this category completely. That doesn’t mean these women aren’t worthy; in fact, Robbie is the only Oscar newcomer here.

Best Supporting Actor

Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project*

Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water*

Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri*

Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri*

Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World

It’s hard to think of a bigger “fuck you” to the creeps in Hollywood than passing over James Franco for Best Actor, then nominating Plummer in this category.

Best Supporting Actress

Mary J. Blige, Mudbound*

Alison Janney, I, Tonya*

Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread

Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird*

Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water*

I’m not surprised to see Manville sliding in over her costar Vicky Krieps. Manville was steely and fearless, but I still think this comes down to Metcalf vs. Janney.
