L block is everyone’s hero.

According to Kotaku, 7-time world Tetris Champion Jonas Neubauer was defeated at the Tetris World Championship in Portland, Oregon over the weekend. The new Champ? 16-year-old Joseph Saelee, who won a three game streak in a best of five competition against Neubauer. Said Neubauer of the match:

The kid played with pure heart, the most clutch Tetris that we’ve seen from anyone. He just really had the ability, had the natural ability, and let it shine as bright as he could in his first tournament. [It’s] truly an honor to pass the torch to the new generation of Tetris players.

Neubauer was previously considered unbeatable, having only suffered a loss in 2014

Saelee won by the use of a technique called hyper-tapping. It requires a user to tap the d-pad with speed and precise timing to move blocks around  to the player’s advantage. A difficult technique, but incredibly rewarding.

On his win, Saelee had this to say:

I don’t know how to feel, I’m still recovering. It’s absolutely a dream. I came into this tournament just to qualify, just to meet all these great people, and to win, that’s just amazing, I don’t know what to say.
